PRESENTER: David Childers
Bio:
Before I even started to jot down memories of my life working in the motion picture and television business I asked myself if I was even capable of writing a book and having it published. But, I wanted to try because of so many great and incredible stories there was to share with others who had no idea of what it took to create and make a motion picture.
The stories, the memories and the time it took in making movies seemed much easier then to try and recreate those events in writing a book. I questioned my ability to actually become an author, since I had been a key grip for so many years. I knew how to push a camera dolly, build rigs on vehicles to mount cameras and lights, but writing a book was completely on the back shelf for me.
After retirement, especially during the winter months in Utah where it gets quite cold, I needed not find another activity during those days. I started writing down stories that really stood out from my career on yellow pads of paper. Putting as many details together as possible. I would write these stories down and as I continued writing more and more thoughts came into my head.
From these thoughts I started going back and watching these various movies to give me further thoughts and ideas of what it took to create the scenes I was watching on the TV. What were the extra efforts our crew put forth to help create the look of these projects.
So many times I remembered that we worked night after night for days, weeks and even a couple of months. Sure there were times where we all hated working all nighters. But that is what it took!
There were many times I wished I could have been at home watching one of my kids baseball or football games, a dance recital or a basketball game. We learned as a family there were going to be sacrifices made because of the crazy schedules we had.
